SGI-USA is a lay Buddhist organization.  SGI stands for Soka Gakkai International (Soka Gakkai is Japanese for “Value Creating Society”).  Our collective goal is to realize world peace though each person becoming happy.  As our SGI president, Daisaku Ikeda, state, “A great human revolution in just a single individual will help achieve a change in the destiny of a nation and further, will enable a change in the destiny of all humankind.”

SGI Buddhists believe that all people have the power to lead lives of great value and creativity and to positively influence their communities, society and the world. Nichiren Buddhism stresses that the greatest fulfillment in life is found in working for the happiness of others.

SGI-USA strives to contribute to American society in significant ways, as it has for five decades. Areas of focus span culture, peace activism, disaster relief, sustainability, and education. As a nongovernmental organization (NGO) with formal ties to the United Nations, SGI is actively engaged in awareness raising and education toward the realization of sustainable development, human rights and peace, including nuclear disarmament.
